Your Neighbourhood Guide To Renting in Brixton

Life is sweet south of the river. Or so Brixton residents will tell you.

Rents are lower and air quality is better than in the centre of the Big Smoke. You've got tons of green space to play in, plenty of buses, and a decent Overground service even if the tube is lacking.

Who lives in Brixton?

Brixton is full of true South London locals, students, city workers, and those in search of a vibrant atmosphere. It's bursting with nightlife and noise, so it's not a particularly family-oriented place, although it does retain the feel of a small community.

How much will I pay to rent in Brixton?

Generally speaking, it's much cheaper to rent South of the river than it is in North and East London.

Average rents in Brixton are £435 per week, or £1,740 per month. It's always cheaper to rent in house shares than privately, and you can find rooms in the region of £600 to £1,000 per month.

What's the commute like from Brixton?

Just over 10 minutes on the Victoria line will get you to Oxford Street, Soho, and Victoria Station.

Because you're south of the river, getting into the City is a little bit more of a pain. You can get the Victoria then the District & Circle lines to get into the City in half an hour.

Commuting to West London is relatively easy, you’ll just need about 30 minutes on the Victoria and then the Piccadilly line.

What's the food like in Brixton?

Brixton is big on Caribbean cuisine, but you can also find French, Mexican, Japanese, Indian and British as well as tons of vegan and vegetarian options and great coffee shops.

Try Healthy Eaters on Electric Avenue or Fish, Wings & Ting in Brixton Village for some Jamaican curried goat.

Where can I work out in Brixton?

There are plenty of gyms including chain gyms PureGym, Fitness First, and The Gym. Independent Fuse Fitness runs classes both in the studio and in the park.

Brixton Recreation Centre is kitted out with a pool and squash, badminton, netball, and volleyball courts.

Brockwell Park is ideal for runners, and you can even join a weekly park run.

Is Brixton the place for me?

Brixton is ideal for those at the start of the London career ladder. It’s a great entry point because rents aren’t hugely higher than in other towns in the southeast.

The huge mix of cultures and cuisines and the wild nightlife can make it feel hectic at times. But if it's cool enough for Bowie, it's cool enough for most people.
